Surgical And Non-surgical Treatment Options For Earlobes

Just like in the rest of our face, our earlobes lose fat as we age. The skin also gets thinner adding to the wrinkling effect. Often, because of heavy earrings, earlobes have tears or rips. Some women start to feel self-conscious about their ears.

Our ears are prominent features that aren’t hidden behind most hair styles. Thankfully, there are easy treatment options available to restore aging, elongated or ripped ear lobes.

Ear Lobe Filler

With the use of dermal fillers, such as Juvederm® or Restylane®, we are able to revolumize and restore an improved earlobe shape, giving them a more pleasing youthful looking appearance with no real downtime.

One of the more uncommon, but very beneficial uses of injectable fillers is to rejuvenate the appearance of the thinned ear lobe. Adding volume to the ear lobe through an injectable filler helps expand and stretch the ear lobe out to a more youthful appearance.*

Because it is a quick and easy remedy for thin, sagging, wrinkled, misshapen earlobes that instantly plumps them resulting in a more pleasant, more youthful appearance and shape.

Dermal filler is a quick and easy fix for damaged, ripped or torn earlobes. A small amount of dermal filler injected into a damaged earlobe adds volume to the area, returning it to a more natural shape. It helps in plumping up stretched, drooping and painful-looking earlobes.

Volumize and improve the shape of the ear lobe

We prefer the use of a hyaluronic filler, such as Juvaderm®, Restylane®, Restylane® Defyne, or Restylane® Lyft, to revolumize this earlobe tissue. Juvederm®, Restylane®

Either Restylane® or Juvederm® can be used to quickly restore volume to the earlobes.

Filler injections to the earlobes are more long lasting compared to filler injections in the lips or face, presumably due to the lack of wear and tear of any muscle movement on the lobe area. Filler in the lobes lasts around 12 months in many individuals, though some may achieve more or less lasting improvement. Longevity may vary due to individual factors and cannot be guaranteed. Most are thrilled with the effect and longevity, though, so we highly recommend this treatment.

Recovery is minimal and there is no actual downtime needed. Patients can wear ear rings immediately thereafter and there is no swelling or bruising after treatment. It is a “lunch time” ear lobe lift.

A small volume of 0.5ccs in each ear lobe is usually all that is needed to achieve an aesthetically pleasing look.

$550-$700 per filler syringe depending on the filler recommended and selected by the patient. We will discuss the benefits and anticipated longevity of each type of dermal filler and help you select the appropriate one to achieve your goals.

Earlobe Repair Treatment

Surgery to repair a torn earlobe is a commonly sought, as piercing an earlobe puts it at risk to tearing. The size, style and weight of an earring can result in undesirable stretching of the opening. Large earrings may get caught on something or pulled by a child. The may result in a partially or completely torn earlobe.

Repair of a torn earlobe occurs using a local anesthetic and sutures. The procedure consists of opening the edges of the split, reattachment, and sutures to repair of the torn earlobe. After a healing period of several months, then the patient can have their ear re-pierced if so desired.

Recovery is minimal and doesn’t interfere with daily living. The earlobes will heal over the weeks following repair. Earlobe repair presents no real complications for most and healing is easy. Immediately after the procedure, the ear lobes will be swollen and have visible stitches. Do not wash the lobe area for 24 hours. You should ice the lobes on and off for 24 hours. It is advisable to sleep on your back while healing. Do not wear earrings for at least a month or two. The stitches will dissolve or be removed in days. Full healing takes weeks.

$1000 for both ears, $700 for single ear

Ear lobe reduction

For many men and women, the ear lobes are droopy and elongated, due to aging or as a result of weight of heavier earrings that cause the earlobe to stretch and hang lower. Often, elongated and drooping earlobes, as well as earlobe rips and defects become more visible and unappealing with age.

Earlobe reduction is a simple, in office, painless surgical procedure that is performed to correct large, elongated, or misshapen earlobes. This can be a hereditary condition or as in some cases, drooping earlobes can be caused by heavy earrings or aging.

Earlobe reduction is highly customized for the specific individual issue, is performed under local anesthesia, and heals with very minimal unnoticeable scarring. The procedure begins with marking the earlobe area that is to be removed and then injecting the lobe with local numbing anesthesia. Dr. Bloy will then remove the excess earlobe tissue and close the incision with stitches.

There are no real complications associated with earlobe reduction and each is performed based on the surgical expectations and the desired outcome.

There is usually no obvious scar on the lobe. If the line of the sutures is faint or bothersome, the patient may have it treated with SmartSkin CO2 laser resurfacing to help smooth out and blend the scar 4 weeks post procedure.

Only those who: have healing disorders; have bleeding disorders; or are prone to keloid scarring should not have this procedure. Those who form keloids may opt for this procedure if the benefit of the procedure outweighs the possible keloid scar that they are prone to form.
