Frequently Asked Questions About Erectile Dysfunction Acoustic Wave Therapy

ED Acoustic Wave Therapy is a regenerative approach that aims to restore health and function to the penis helping men regain a spontaneous, active sex life. Most other therapies involve the continuing use of medication or injections, diminished effectiveness over time, pre-planning when a man wants to have sex, or surgical treatments such as implants.

ED Acoustic Wave therapy is a simple, drug free, painless, non-invasive procedure that cures or reduces vascular ED difficulties instead of just treating the symptoms. Our treatment uses intensity-extracorporeal acoustic wave therapy (LI-SWT) to enable natural or spontaneous erections. This restores both the anatomical and physiological erectile function. The treatment was developed in Europe and has been successfully used over the past decade in many areas of medicine in the U.S.

Acoustic Wave Therapy uses vibration to carry energy. These vibrations can travel through skin to an anatomical region to target a specific area. When low intensity Acoustic Wave Therapy is applied to an organ, it cause mechanical stress or micro trauma, which in turn, induces a healing response and improvement of blood supply.

The treatment involves low-intensity Acoustic Waves (similar to ultrasound waves) being transmitted onto the treatment area. The Acoustic Waves create micro trauma to the tissue, stimulating the body’s natural healing response. These Acoustic Waves accelerate the body’s healing response, stimulating the treated tissues to grow new blood vessels, resulting in improved erection performance. For even more erectile rejuvenation, acoustic wave therapy may be combined with the P-Shot (platelet rich plasma), which adds a high concentration of growth factors to strategic areas according to a patented protocol.

Treatment leads to improved blood flow to the penis. The desired result is that men are able to obtain erections more normally. Some men are able to get better erections without medications, other men are able to get better erections with the same or lower dose of medications.

Patients have reported noticeable improvements within three weeks of beginning the course.
The results are long lasting and may be more permanent. Effects have been scientifically proven to last 2-3 years, but this varies with individual health and lifestyle factors.
The first step is to schedule a consultation with one of the practitioners at contemporary health center. You’ll meet with the practitioner to discuss your condition, medical history and other treatments you’ve tried. The practitioner will review treatment options and help you decide which is best.

A patient does not need to make any changes to their daily routine prior to the session.

Protocol for acoustic wave therapy typically involves six total short therapy sessions, or 12 for severe dysfunction, lasting approximately 30 minutes each. Usually, there are two treatments per week. For many men, there is an almost immediate improvement in the symptoms of erectile dysfunction. The results are very long lasting. Follow up appointments are made to monitor the man’s health and condition.
With acoustic wave therapy, there is no need for lifelong treatment. Often 1 course of treatment will lead to long- term improvement in erectile function without the need for continuous treatment. Periodic maintenance treatment as part of maintenance therapy may be beneficial.

The treatment is pain-free and patients may feel a tingling sensation, not unlike pins and needles.

Yes! There are no reported side-effects during or after the therapy, and the treatment is proven to be safe. This is an FDA cleared technology, originally developed in Europe and used worldwide. The EPAT device we use is state- of-the-art and has extensive applications including orthopedic medicine, urology, anti-aging treatments and wound healing. When performed by a qualified practitioner, EPAT has virtually no risks or side effects.
There are virtually no risks or side effects. In some cases, patients have reported minor discomfort which may continue for a few days. Tylenol is sufficient for this discomfort. While extremely rare, it has been reported that veno-occlusive vascular insufficiency may have been induced by acoustic wave therapy.

No. Patients can carry on with their normal activities immediately following each treatment session, including sexual activity.

Men with high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and heart disease with vascular erectile difficulties can benefit. The treatment can be used for almost all patients, of any age, even those on anticoagulants. The sooner a patient seeks treatment for ED from us, the better the outcome will be. Acoustic wave therapy works best for men who have mild to moderate ED, which usually means that oral medications such as Viagra work well or at least help somewhat. For these men, as many as 70% can stop taking oral medications. Please note that assessment by our trained practitioner is necessary. We know there are certain treatments, conditions and individual histories that are likely respond better or worse to acoustic wave therapy. For men who are not candidates for acoustic wave treatment or if acoustic wave therapy does not provide satisfactory improvement, other treatments for ED are available.

Peyronie’s disease is caused by fibrous scar tissue, which impacts the curvature of the penis and can lead to erectile dysfunction. Acoustic wave therapy has proven effective in the treatment of Peyronie’s disease. Using low intensity acoustic wave and the P-Shot, we have been able to straighten the erection and improve elasticity of connective tissue.
For many men, acoustic wave treatment is as effective as treatment with medications such as Viagra. Many men treated with acoustic wave therapy for erectile dysfunction find that they no longer need medications to obtain and maintain a quality erection. Other men find that they get a better erection with medications after treatment than they got with medications alone.
Studies show that the acoustic wave Therapy improves the quality of erections in over 70% of patients with vasculogenic erectile decline or dysfunction. It is important to understand that not every man will benefit from it. As many as 30% of men may not achieve the desired result. Still, the potential benefits of this treatment – spontaneous and sustainable erections – make it worth a try!
This varies greatly and can be determined at consultation. Please bring your insurance information to your appointment. Even without insurance coverage, many men find the out of pocket cost of prescriptions and other less effective methods make this treatment a greater value.

While acoustic wave therapy is suitable for most men suffering from erectile dysfunction, there are some conditions or contraindications that means acoustic wave is not an option.

Acoustic wave therapy for ED is unsuitable in the following circumstances:

  • You have implanted cardiac stents, heart valves or a pacemaker.
  • If you are hemophiliac.
  • You have a malignant tumor present at the treatment site.
  • You have an infection or skin abrasion at the treatment site
  • If you have been advised not to undertake sexual intercourse, e.g. following a heart attack and/or cardiac surgery.
  • If you suffer from nerve damage depriving your penis of sensation, acoustic wave therapy is unlikely to be beneficial until that issue is resolved.
  • For men who have erection problems as a result of nervous system dysfunction (anxiety, depression, multiple sclerosis), acoustic wave therapy will not work.
  • You are under 18.
